The Aboriginal Culture and Heritage program is aligned with the SACSA (South Australian Curriculum, Standards and Accountability) framework and is targeted, but is adaptable and flexible enough to be delivered across the school sector.
The program has the following elements, all of which can be offered to schools and communities;
- Target Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal students
- Respect and understanding of culture
- Sports and recreation
- Promotion of the diversity of culture e.g. contemporary Aboriginal lifestyles, traditional lifestyles, cultural heritage;
- Aboriginal story telling
- Aboriginal music and dance
- Aboriginal Art
- Boomerang / spear throwing and traditional Games
- Health and well-being which include;
- Nutrition
- Traditional foods - bush tucker
- Medicine
Each of these interactive programs has been designed and presented by Aboriginal people with a passion maintaining culture and heritage.
The program is predominately focused on delivery by existing Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal role models through art and culture. Art and culture has been used to establish a rapport and enable us to expand that rapport into health and wellbeing, education and pathways to employment.
The focus of our company is to support the advancement of our communities both state-wide and nationally, with a predominant focus on supporting Aboriginal youth, who are our future leaders.
Our experience has been that without the collaboration and partnerships with existing programs in education, the success of our program is reduced. We therefore have focused on developing support mechanism through;
- Utilising the expertise of the Aboriginal Education Coordinators
- Social Inclusion officers
- Aboriginal youth and social workers
- Student counsellors
- Community development officers
- Community engagement officer
There are 6 main areas of interest:
- Shows specifically aimed for Aboriginal education and Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal student audiences
- Allow access for the young and emerging artists through professional development opportunities and mentorships
- Providing a platform for established and professional artists
- Allow for collaborations with other indigenous organisations and cross cultural practice with other international indigenous communities
- Fulfil the need to maintain Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Cultural art practice through maintaining story song and dance and visual arts within its chosen productions both contemporary and traditional expression
- Provide scholarships for Indigenous arts students
